The aim of this exercise is to highlight your preferences for the way that you best understand information. It will reveal your preferred learning style, or learning modalities. The result will also guide you in the completion of this course. You can print this page out or cut and paste it in to a word processing program and print it out. Transfer the scores to each question above in the space next to it. Total your score for each column. The column that has the highest score reveals your major learning modality. If you have two similar scores it shows that you have strengths in both areas. If one score is close to your largest score, then it is enhanced by that modality. If you have three very similar scores, then you have an equality of strengths across modalities. Please remember that these are strengths. No single type or modality is superior to another.
Ant Exercise
Phone a friend and just chat to them. Ask neutral questions like “tell me about your home town”. Instead of thinking about what you are going to say next, listen for the way that person uses the representational systems - visual (sight), auditory (sound) and kinaesthetic (feelings). They will have a preferred representational system. Listen for and write down the key words that they say, using the examples below. Try to listen to the words they use to say things, rather than what they are saying. Visual | Auditory | Kinaesthetic | Perspective | Tell | Feel | Looks | Talk | Hurt | See | Sounds like | Feel | Observe | Listen | Close | Pattern | Ring | Cold | Clearer | Hear | Comfortable |
More Questions You Can Ask "I'm thinking of buying an MP3 player. What would you recommend?" "Tell me about that holiday you had last year." "Everyone's talking about that new TV show. What do you think of it?"
Snail Exercise
You'll need to phone a friend for this one, preferably a close friend who will help you with it. Ask your friend to have a simulated telephone conversation with you. Pretend that one person (the salesperson) is trying to sell something to the other. Ask your friend to play the role of the person who has made the call (the customer). Pretend s/he wants to buy the item, but has innumerable questions and queries about it. You pretend to be the salesperson, matching the customer's voice tone, volume and tempo exactly. The customer changes voice tone, volume and tempo with each new question that is asked asked. Allow time for questions to be answered. After five minutes, change roles with your friend. At the end of the exercises write down a few paragraphs on how you felt during the exercises.
